He has something of an athletic build, owing to the fact that he clearly enjoys playing sports, and is particularly skilled at basketball. Considered to be something of a playboy, he takes pride in his appearance, taking particular care to style his hair. Besides his height, one of the first things one would be likely to notice about Shinji is his eyes; brown in colour, he is capable of a piercing gaze, but they are just as likely to be expressing humour than a more serious emotion. Shinji keeps his hair its natural black colour, and relatively short, presumably because it is easier to manage that way, and he still manages to look good with it at that length, whilst showcasing the earring he wears in his left ear. As far as his general appearance goes, there is nothing that is overly striking about him; he is, basically, something of an average teenage boy, who works (albeit to a limited extent, since he often has more important things to think about) with what he has, and isn't bothered with what he doesn't have, allowing his charisma to work for him. Special abilities/talents: Shinji is incredibly skilled at working with technology and science (be it computers, or otherwise, he is very capable, particularly when it comes to hacking, or building something from scratch). He is perfectly capable of using something mundane household objects to build a bomb, and using items ranging from mobile phones through to computers to create a modem for himself, and hacking into other computers and networks. Quirks: Shinji has a habit of taking his time to think things through. He likes to come to evaluated, reasoned judgements, based more on intelligence than anything else. He fully admits that when it comes to taking care of personal belongings, particularly books, he can be somewhat anal-retentive in how much care goes into looking after them. In contrast to this, he is quite untidy when it comes to such things as handwriting and spelling, making frequent mistakes in what is best described as a 'scrawl'. Personality: Shinji is an intelligent, quick witted youth who is particularly fond of finding out as much as he can about the world around him, regardless of the trouble that may land him in. Fully aware that he is more aware of their situation than 90% of his nation's population, it would be easy for Shinji to appear smug and arrogant – or as much as one could when faced with the type of government they were. In contrast, Shinji is a relatively friendly boy, easy to chat to, easy to get along with, but he does however have an arrogant sense of humour, often coming out with remarks that imply he is better than whoever he happens to be making the joke to at that time. Despite the fact that he doesn't necessarily aim to come across as such, he is somewhat proud and cocky. Despite this, Shinji is an averagely popular boy, finding it easy to get with girls (despite his distaste for relationships) due to his skill in sports, resulting him in ultimately having a reputation as a playboy. Aware of his surroundings, he prefers to make friends – proper friends – with people he considers to be genuine and honest, and not too laid back or highly strung. He's a person that, despite appearances, does not easily trust people. This is more than likely due to a mixture of his upbringing with his uncle, and his awareness of his, and his nations, situation in relation to the wider world around them. He is, as a result, rather picky about those that he does make friends with, and how much he is willing to reveal to them. Shinji, despite being something of a natural born leader, isn't very good with words, and would much rather display his thoughts through actions. If a situation relies on him having to say something with feeling, something overly sentimental, he is completely aware that most of what he ends up coming out with, despite being honest, always sounds rather ham-fisted and incredibly awkward, and he never quite knows how to express his emotions. Reputation: Shinji is admired to a certain extent by his fellow students; he's seen to be intelligent, quite nice and is therefore something of a figure of confidence in relation to his classmates, despite the fact that there a number of girls who distrust him due to his playboy nature. Background Information: Shinji was born to a pretty well off family; his father was a bureaucrat, and his mother didn't need to work. They didn't get on particularly well, having a mutual distrust and something of a dislike for each other, one pursuing affairs, the other flitting from hobby to hobby in an attempt to bring something resembling interest to their life. Shinji had, as a result, complete dislike for both of his parents, unable to see the point in relationships if that was how they turned out. However, he wasn't completely lacking in decent adult figures in his life; Shinji was particularly close to his uncle, learning pretty much everything from him – ranging from the mundane, such as sports, to the less so, such as computer hacking, and, apparently, a working knowledge of chemistry and how one builds (at least basic) weaponry like bombs. Shinji's uncle was a man who was utterly against the totalitarian fascist government that ruled over Japan at this time, and had formerly worked against the government as part of a movement looking to overthrow the corrupt regime. This distaste of the government and what they were hiding was thus instilled in Shinji, and he was very much his Uncle's nephew, rather than his Father's son. After his Uncle's death, Shinji's distrust of the government reached even greater heights, and aimed to excel at whatever it was he chose to do, keeping the ethics that his Uncle had imparted to him. However, his class – the Third year, Class B of Shiroiwa Junior High School – would not have much chance to do anything. Their class was chosen via an impartial lottery to participate in the governments "Battle Royale" programme, where the students of any particular class would be sent to an abandoned island to fight to the death until there was only one survivor. Shinji participated in this 'game' the best way he knew how; with a computer, planning first to hack into the islands headquarters for the programme, and disable all of the collars around the students necks. Due to the fact that the collars contained microphones that relayed whatever was discussed back to the HQ, this plan failed. After Shinji realised that this was the cause, he went to 'Plan B', enlisting the help of his best friend, Yutaka Seto, and aimed to build a bomb that would be dropped onto the HQ. However, after an appearance from a classmate, Yutaka and Shinji have an argument, resulting in the arrival of yet another student, Kazuo Kiriyama, who proceeds to shoot, and kill, Yutaka, and critically wounds Shinji. At this point, Shinji straps himself to the bomb, aiming to detonate it and kill Kazuo with him, knowing that he, himself, is going to die regardless. Heaven or Hell? Hell. After having read through the information provided, I thought that whilst Shinji would never choose hell, he probably wouldn't choose Heaven, either; he's far more neutral in personality, far too much of a realist to think that the idea of Heaven winning could 'make' the world a better place. Also, if it came down to think, he'd rather defend himself than sacrifice himself for any greater good (despite the fact that he allowed himself to die in BR, he aimed on taking Kiriyama with him based on the fact that he, himself, was about to die anyway, and Kiriyama had killed his friends; I couldn't see him dying for any old person). So, whilst I could see him being a reluctant member of Hell, if it came down to his survival or otherwise, I believe he'd choose his own (and his cynical nature would probably be out of place in Heaven). | |||||||||
